Beginning of Kristi Viidingʼs course, “The Early Modern Period in European literature in Latin” at Academia Artium Liberalium

Literature in Latin was continuously produced in Europe over 2000 years, from the third century BCE until the 17th century CE. The best-known, most researched and most often read part of this heritage is the literature of the ancient period, despite the fact that the volume of Latin literature in the medieval and early modern period is much larger. Here one is not only dealing with epigonic imitations of ancient literature, but reactions to contemporary problems in literary form.

This systematic lecture course on genres and problems in Latin literature in Europe 1300–1800 does not presume in-depth knowledge of Latin on the part of the listeners. Textual examples will also be presented in translation.
