The Under and Tuglas Literature Centre (UTLC) of the Estonian
Academy of Sciences is a research and development institution of the Estonian Academy of Sciences whose main
tasks are the study of texts from Estonian written culture in both historical and theoretical perspective, the
analysis of Estonian literature in the contexts of the historical Baltic literary space and of world literature,
and the development of literary and cultural theory in close connection with the newest trends in the world.
The main task of the centre’s development work is the publication of historical
sources of Estonian national literature and of the texts of liberal arts.
The UTLC has four series of publications: Collegium litterarum publishes
researches on literary history and oxymora publishes studies with a more theoretical approach. Moodsa eesti kirjanduse seminar (Seminar in Modern Estonian Literature) is introducing and analyzing the key texts of modern Estonian literature, Underi ja Tuglase Kultuuriloolised kogud (Collections of Cultural History of the Under and Tuglas Literature Centre) is published by the affiliate museum of UTLC. The publication of
Friedebert Tuglas’s Kogutud teosed (Collected Works) has reached the commented and critically edited
volumes of his legacy of criticism and essays.
The Museum of the UTLC in Nõmme manages the cultural material (more than
51 ,000 items, including the ready reference collection and the material added later) as well as the house and garden that
belonged to Friedebert Tuglas, Marie Under and Artur Adson. The Museum also serves researchers and receives
tours and individual visitors.
